If you know a little about the process of cleaning water in treatment plants, you know that chlorine is one of the chemical elements present. But have you ever wondered what excess intake of this mineral can cause your body?

Benefits

Chlorination, that is, the addition of chlorine to water, is used on a large scale to prevent the proliferation of viruses, bacteria and protozoa. Chlorine is a very effective mineral to make water drinkable, removing its impurities. In addition, the element has good bacteriological efficiency, as it is capable of killing and preventing the multiplication of microorganisms.

The mineral is also effective in disinfecting water and is one of the main responsible for the control and eradication (in much of the planet) of diseases such as typhoid fever, dysentery and cholera. According to Scientific American, some advocates of chlorination (such as the American Water Works Association, a group that represents water companies in the US) consider this process one of the greatest achievements in public health history.

Disadvantages

The main disadvantage of chlorination is the ability of chlorine to interact with organic compounds present in pipes, pipes and water reservoirs, since the product of this contact is trihalomethanes (THMs) which, when ingested, can stimulate the proliferation of free radicals capable of destroy or damage cells in the human body. This exposure could still cause problems in the arteries due to the increase in LDL cholesterol, respiratory problems, skin problems and even some types of cancer, such as kidney and bladder.

Experts also point to the suspicion of bronchitis and asthma. According to biologist Valdir Natal Rochinheski, specialist in Environmental Sciences, a study published in the American Journal says that the inhalation of chlorinated vapors - such as hot bath water - can cause these problems, in addition to drying hair and of the skin, causing eczema.

How to take advantage and reduce risks?

The use of water purifiers and filters appears as a consensus among researchers. According to both articles, the use of quality filter elements can eliminate or drastically reduce excess chlorine, discarding harmful effects and preserving water quality. Another important point highlighted by the articles is the use of filters in showers and washing machines, since at these points, water also comes into contact, directly and indirectly, with a large part of our skin.
